Remembering Basic Chinese Words

26 05 2008

I was done watching Tokyo Juliet yesterday.  A chinese telenobela based in Taiwan and the audio is chinese but with English subtitles.   Hearing them talk mandarin chinese made me miss the country where I have lived for 3 solid years. :)   I guess if I continue to watch these type of movies – I will never totally forget some of the basic chinese words like the following:

Hello – Ni hao
How are you – Ni hao ma?
Have you eaten – Ni cher le ma? (they usually give u this greeting when u meet a chinese friend and i often joke with them what if i will answer – no i havent eaten yet, are they going to let me eat? then they would just laugh at me.  it was like asking someone to eat but it is just a formal greeting not really inviting someone to eat. :D )

Thanks – Xie xie
you – ni
you (plural) – nimen
we – women
Me – wo de
i love you – wo ai ni
my love - wo de ai.
come come - lai le
what - she ma le?
welcome – huanying
fried rice – chaofan (my favorite)
fried noodles – chaomian (my favorite)
fish – yu (my frends and i love to eat sichuan fish – very spicy fish dish)
yogurt – suannai (favorite
water – shui
good nite – wan an
I am a Filipino - wo de pilipen ren
I am an english teacher -wo de yingyu laoshi

These are just the basic words that I can think that i spelled them right.  I still have many words but I dunno how to spell them right in pinyin just like the following:

what is your name
how old are you
take care
no problem
so expensive
let’s go
go on
turn left
turn right
stop
i don’t understand
yes
no
do you understand?
oh my God!

Well, the word that i really had a hard time saying is the train station that many times when i asked a taxi driver to bring me to the train station i have to make the sound of teh train and how it runs. hahahaha.  With my few chinese words I enjoy talking with the driver.  I can ask him if he is married or not how  many children and old are they.  It was like they happily converse with me in chinese though am not a native one.  They feel happy when they hear you speak their language.  One of the main reason I didn’t master speaking the language while there was “i want them to learn english.”  they would love to hear you say that you wanna learn learning their language and it will turn out that I learn more than what they should be in their oral english.

Some of the important few words I really learned were the bad words.  though i didn’t use it but at least I will know if it is used on me.  Just like one time, I was doing something and it failed, one teacher commented in chinese using a bad word.  I really kicked him on the front.  They wondered why and I told him don’t u think I don’t understand?  If am stupid well you are more stupid!   And they all laughed at me.

Monday w/ Durian Fruit and Pepsi

26 05 2008

Yes. Had a pc of durian fruit (one big luscious durian fruit – seed w/ meat)! Can have more if i want to but that 1 pc was too much and I thought i wanna eat some ice cream with it but there was none.  Instead of the ice cream my boss said to buy Coke.  There was no Coke available so i grabbed the Pepsi.  I thought he will drink but no he did not – but some of us did.  I had a cup of it.  ONe commented that iba na daw ang lasa ng Pepsi (probably altered by the taste of the Durian fruit) but to me Pepsi is still the lad-ang one.  No one can beat the taste of Coke although am not fun of drinking it anymore.

Contemplating on the act of buying the Coke and bringing it inside the school camapus I feel funny.  Well, it is not a big deal to me or to many of us but I just know that if permitted their would be a lot fo judgemental glances and even comment.  Well, nagpakatoto lang kami.  Adventist as we are – there are really times when we do love to drink caffeinated drink.  So what I did, I covered the Pepsi with white plastic and yes it was not seen.  I remember too we did that in Pasay Guesthouse.  That was Saturday (Saturday pa jud)  we asked somebody to buy a litre of Coke but should be covered when entering the Adventist Campus.  It is funny really!  But i know it is not funny to all.
